Carnival of Ohio Politics #87

How familiar do you think Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is with California Proposition 87 which, "...would have established a "$4 billion program with goal to reduce petroleum consumption by 25%, with research and production incentives for alternative energy, alternative energy vehicles, energy efficient technologies, and for education and training", funded by a "tax of 1.5% to 6% (depending on oil price per barrel) on producers of oil extracted in California"? If the Ohio legislature thinks there's a lot of bling in the energy debate, they should see the numbers from Prop. 87! $40 mil v. $95 mil - I'll let you guess which side had how much and who won.

Here's our gusher of a carnival:

Our first rush of oil to grease your political gears is from Roland Hansen Commentary. He wants our opinion as to whether we find the Lucas County Commissioners: Bored, Board or What?

The flow of political ideas in Ohio gets its next burst from a new source, Just Blowing Smoke. First, a Toledo Blade editorial comes under fire for promoting what blog author, Tim Higgins calls, "returning to 'Flintsone' technology to subdue criminals." Think about applying this excellent review of wines while you ponder how much less out-of-state wine will be gushing into Ohio. And finally, while this is an introspective post, since he's a first-timer, I'm letting it in because I think that what he describes is something we need to think about when we think about Ohio government and what we want our lives to be like here in Ohio.

I've never met a Word of Mouth post I didn't like. This week, Kelly Boyer Sagert mines the topic of
whether the Lorain City School Distict's administration realize the importance of school nurses in, "Healthy School District: a Key Ingredient" Then, Brian Hazelett wants to know, "Who RUNS our city?" - who does Lorain hold responsible for projects that should have been completed long ago, like EPA mandates handed down during the 1980's? "Memo To: Chuck Camera and Pat McGannon," by Roman Kniahynyckyj, suggests that the city of Seven Hills and others in Ohio use pervious concrete to help alleviate the backed up sewers whenever there is a hard rain. But why not Lorain?

Kyle at The Chief Source was not paid to submit this post about the University of Akron Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and AAPC panel, News, Bloggers and New Media in 2008 Ohio.

The stateside match of Governor Ted Strickland (D) v. State Auditor Mary Taylor (R) on internal audit management is the subject of Tom Blumer aka Bizzy Blog's post this week (the same topic gets stand-alone attention in this Wide Open post, Taylor's Internal Audit Plan, and Strickland's Promised Veto).

Wide Open, the new group political blog on the Cleveland.com platform (full disclosure: I'm one of the four as is Tom Blumer, Dave of NixGuy and Jeff Coryell of Ohio Daily Blog), also submitted this separated at birth post, Marc Dann: Eliot Spitzer's Mini-Me.

I keep confusing Hair Club for Men with the group Scott Pullins of The Pullins Report highlights in this post, More Lies from The Club for Growth. I'm a vertically challenged mother of three growing kids - what can I say? Likewise, Latta Campain Files Elections Complaint also examines and exposes political campaigning tactics in Ohio.

How do you divine the intentions of a sponsor behind a particular campaign ad? The Virtuous Republic scrutinizes one such entity in Catholic Organization Runs Ads Against Rep. Chabot.

Ben of The Keeler Report gives us an update regarding I-90 expansions with Avon ends up caving to Cleveland over proposed I-90 interchange. He then turns to one of several Ohio congressional races shaping up and predicts that Ralph Regula retiring will produce a showdown between Repulican Kurt Schurring and Democrat John Boccieri for the open seat in OH-16.

Conservative Culture believes that the religion of peace wants to fly a new flag over the the Vatican. He's also concerned that equal justice is not achieved with laws that are meant to be tools with which we can pursue that goal. And finally, with an emphasis on local coverage, you can read about who the Lima people may pick as their new Council President.

Jeff Coryell of Ohio Daily Blog offers a look at Zack Space's progress in fundraising and the endorsement race between the two Republican candidates for the OH-5 nomination. And, in a dramatic and dramatically graphic post, he tries to help us understand the foreclosure crisis.

How is it that the Toledo area could have started before Cleveland, when it comes to being environmentally friendly, yet now be so far behind, Lisa Renee asks at Glass City Jungle.

And for me? All I want is an answer to this question.

Thanks again to everyone and if you know of folks who might not be on our mailing list, would you please invite them to submit? Or post something on your blog inviting people to submit?

Have a great week.

Thanks Jill for another great job.

The real cool thing about Brian's WoM post featured this week is that we had former Lorain Mayor and current 56th District Ohio Representative Joe Koziura along with the head of the City of Lorain's Building Department William "Billy D." Desvari participate in the discussion.

When a locally oriented, politically-slanted blog can engage local politicians as commenters - that's a good thing.

Scott - thanks - you are, of course, 150% correct which is what is so exemplary about WOM. :) Thank you to you and all the WOMmers for the time and effort you put into it.
