That's a 1955 Oldsmobile 88 celebrating the Carnival's 88th post. We don't have a lot of classic cars with numbers attached -- we have the 409, someday probably the 300, maybe a couple of others. But we have the 88. Whether a slice of heaven on wheels like this or the 1970's Delta 88 steamship (whose trunk can comfortably accommodate two college students on the way into a drive-in movie, I learned once upon a time) or the more modern version which, sorry Madison Ave, is so totally your father's Oldsmobile, you hear 88 and you think Olds.I'm too much out of the game to work car metaphors through the whole post. Just enjoy the picture. And the following.
Ben Keeler observes OSU students protesting a gun exclusion policy on campus and isn't sure quite how he feels about college students with guns.
Word of Mouth reports on an upcoming smackdown regarding a tax abatement in Lorain. They post questions for Lorain mayoral candidates -- a candidate questionnaire by blog is something new. And they offer a rundown of a local school board candidates night.
At Progress Ohio, Cliff Schecter has harsh words for Majority Leader Boener's weepy attempt to condemn Rep. Pete Stark. Dave Harding urges attendance at a voting rights forum. And Angelina Spencer again decries the new strip club regulations and the group behind them.
Dispassionate Liberal gets pretty darn passionate about a fight in the Ohio 5th Republican primary over which candidate loves the Ten Commandments more. Glass City Jungle picks up on that theme and gets comments from Himself. Meanwhile, on the Democratic side of the special election in the Fifth, the candidate's vegetarianism provides red meat for doubters.
The Machiavellian worries that a county court setting its own budget will not bring about a Virtuous Republic.
The Dean of Cincinnati discovers a tobacco consumption device that runs on internal combustion and wonders if such a thing would be legal in smoke-free Ohio. I wonder how many miles per carton it gets.
OK, I get one in.
The Chief Source advertises a Halloween charity event, and participates in a conference call with the area Congressional delegation regarding the SCHIP vote.
Matt's take on SCHIP at Weapons of Mass Discussion, is that the Democrats are the party that is playing politics with children's health care. He then levels his Weapons at Sen. George Voinovich in response to the Senator promising to become more involved in the state party. That post prompts him to meditate on politics and Sun Tzu.
The WMD post prompts BizzyBlog to declare victory in the conservative war on Voinovich. Biz also objects to an appeals court overturning a conviction for a quintuple murder.
Yearning to Breathe Free notes that Dayton is in the Top Ten Worst Cities for job creation.
Conservative Culture wonders if an appalling incest case creates line-drawing problems for "same-sex advocates." The ACLU is suing over a change in prayer policy at the Statehouse and Mark is not amused. He's happier about an interview with presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
Maggie Thurber chastises Ohio's senators for their vote in favor of a Charles Rangle-sponsored earmark for a center a facilities to be named after Charles Rangle. She also looks at the Sick Days Ohio proposal and declares it Not Business Friendly.
Jill at Writes Like She Talks analyzes a new STRS voluntary divestment plan. She notes that Republican women in the General Assembly are becoming an endangered species. And she challenges CCV President Phil Burress to offer some witnesses regarding the salutary effects of the new strip club regulations.
Finally, OhioDave offers an extensively reported piece on an Ohio Marine going on trial next week for alleged war crimes.
As for myself, still not up to blogging speed, but I'll get there soon. This was good practice. Thanks as always to our wonderful array of contibutors.
