Carnival #105 -- Radio Days Edition

Today we pay homage to M105, the other great Cleveland radio station of the 1970's. While remembrance of WMMS's salad days has become something of a cottage industry, many of us budding music geeks preferred M105 which leaned toward the avant-garde. Unfortunately in the late 70's that tended to mean pretentious, bloated "art rock" in the Yes/ELP vein, rather than genuinely edgy stuff going on at the time. Nonetheless, M105 (which operated under the never-spoken call letters WWWM) let us know that we didn't have to listen to what everyone else -- or increasingly, what radio subscription services -- wanted us to.

Sometime circa 1981, M105 gave up the ghost, switching format to a subscription-programed oldies station still in operation today as Magic105. Very few remnants have found home on the web -- this image is from the MySpace page of a former producer. But then, the Carnival is great for unearthing forgotten pop culture artifacts.

And for the politics, of course.

First up this week, Jill Miller Zimon offers one of her patented lists -- this time listing ten reasons why she loves the Ohio primary. She also links to an OEA candidate comparison and wonders about the PD's characterization of a Hillary Clinton rally crowd.

Two election law related posts from ePluribus Media. One highlighting Federal District Judge Kathleen O'Malley's decision against Ohio's new law regulation voter registration drives, and one questioning the propriety of a ruling against Union County who is quarreling with SoS Jennifer Brunner over paper ballots.

Bearing Drift Ohio bears down on Ted Strickland's appearance on Fox News, analyzing his responses and non-responses to the Veep question. BDO also wants Michelle Obama to know that he's had occasion to be proud of this country before this year.

The Dean of Cincinnati is worried about a new FBI program that "deputizes" 23,000 business leaders to mobilize against terror threats. And the Dean offers a video about torture in Iraq.

Ben Keeler, writing on his eponymous blog, notes three Republican Congressional primaries worth keeping an eye on. And on his MSM-sponsored blog The Point, he discusses a central committee member of Cuyahoga Co. Republican Party maxing out contributions to Dem Congressional candidate Joe Cimperman.

Cimperman may have gotten Republican contributions, but Redhorse explains why neither he, nor anyone else, will unseat Dennis Kucinich in the 10th District primary. Also, Redhorse offers a directory for Northeast Ohioans who want to vote early.

OhioDave has been on the case of the Dayton Development Coalition, a group that offered a no-bid contract to the wife of Rep. Mike Turner and that lobbies, among others, Rep. Mike Turner. OhDave finds the local business community's complaints about "politicization" a bit rich. He also expresses disappointment in the DDN publisher's statements defending Ms. Turner and the DDC. In an unrelated story Dave examines how a French proposal to mandate a Holocaust studies curriculum illustrates the dangers of Gov. Strickland's proposal for an education czar.

Ohio Republic uses the a failure of a secessionist group in Vermont to explain that people in his movement have to explain why it's to the advantage of the citizens to secede. Indeed.

Plunderbund offers three posts regarding the primary race for Franklin County Commissioner: One comparing direct mail pieces, one calling out candidate O'Grady for a non-compliant robo-call and one criticizing the local party for filing an election law complaint against one of their own.

For myself, I spent most of the week in the basement -- hence the late arrival of your Carnival. But I can offer a review of Chelsea Clinton's appearance here in Akron and two posts about local party boss Alex Arshinkoff's ouster from the Board of Elections.

Thanks as always to those who participated, and thanks to all for your patience this week.

I thought I was the only person who remembered that station. My father was a newscaster for WWWE/WWWM from around '74 - '77. As a teenager, I got some great albums from the promotional bin.

However, I no longer own a turntable.

M105 was a classic station. You could practically smell the pot smoke wafting through your speakers. Also, remeber that cool TV ad using the bassline from the Pretenders' "Mystery Achievement"? Good times. Glad to hear from someone else who remembers.

As for the rest of your comment, I'm currently assembling the hard and the soft to rip my old vinyl. I'll keep you posted.

Interesting tid-bit:
Prior to its darker-version of WMMS incarnation, M105 was a classical, elevator music format - typical of FM radio in the day.

Without absolutely any warning, at the appointed minute when the format changed - the staff segued from Ray Conniff's serene strings to Heavy Metal's distorted guitar riffs - which, no doubt sent many sedated senior-aged Clevelanders scratching their heads and scrambling for their telephones.

The staff thought this would be funny.

M105 trivia question:
Who owned 3WE (1100 AM) and WWWM (105.7 FM)

hint: I recently had the honor of serving this man a drink at my place of employment - and finally got to personally thank him for filling my 1970's with the Indians, Cavs, and Crusaders, not to mention all those albums.

Yes that's how so many fans find out their favorite stations have changed formats. I was already living in Boston in the 70s (well, after 1973) and so I don't remember this station. But of course I had to check out the myspace page. Cool stuff. Seems to me that now most clear channel stations, no matter what their format, are the new elevator music lol. Thanks for sharing your memories, Scott.
