Carnival Of Politics #109: Wounded Warrior Edition

Since part of the campaign narrative this year will involve a battle-scarred war hero, it might do to dedicate Carnival #109 to PT-109 and the man who commanded her, LTJG (and later President) John F. Kennedy.

By the way, "PT" stands for "Patrol torpedo."

Let's start our patrol around the Ohio 'sphere.

Nation of Ghandis at Neocon Panic Attacks doesn't exactly panic over Mayor Coleman's plan to install surveillance cameras in Columbus, but it makes him nervous. More to the point, he wonders if it is a sign we have failed as a society.

Ohio Republic's Harold Thomas means what he says when he tell Ted Strickland not to take the Veep slot on a Hillary ticket. Harold also offers two thoughts related to the energy economy -- one concerned about the coming of peak oil and the other offering alternative energy as one of many ways to succeed in the 21st Century.

At Glass City Jungle Lisa Renee reacts to the reactions to Obama's speech in reaction to the negative reaction to his pastor's sermons. Also she tries to hold a local councilman accountable for past promises in the midst of accusations of parliamentary maneuvering.

In Toledo, Roland Hanson comments on City Council's balancing act as they start writing the budget for the next year.

OhioDave is no fan of U.S. Rep. Mike Turner. On the occasion of Rep. Turner's FISA vote, he catalogs Turner's fealty to the Bush administration. Dave also notes poll results indicating that Ohioans prefer a generic Democrat for President, and calculations that the war in Iraq has cost Ohio $11 billion.

The Dean of Cincinnati weighs in with three posts about the Ohio Graduation Test. He notes evidence that the OGT has cut into instructional time for core subjects, and contradictory signals about whether test prep instruction is ethical. Fortunately, a former boy band member is on the case.

Speaking of education, HistoryMike muses about what his distance learning students' weekend-heavy schedule says about a balanced life in today's America.

At Bearing Drift Ohio, Squeaky Wheel's quote of the day asks whether Jeremiah Wright or Don Imus was taken more out of context. BD Ohio also offers links to an audio interview between the founder of the original Bearing Drift in Virginia and House Minority Leader Rep. John Boener of Ohio.

Conservative Culture offers two law-and-0rder posts. He offers thoughts about an officer charged with misdemeanor negligent homicide as a result of a fatal shooting during a drug raid. And he notes a new border policy prosecuting illegal border crossers.

New blogger Publius, blogging at Publius (don't tell publius) has two thoughts on the Barack Obama/ Jeremiah Wright controversy. First he doubts Obama was left unaffected by Wright's thought. Second, he argues that the root of Wright's extremist rhetoric is a desire for revenge.

Matt at Weapons of Mass Discussion has much fun at the expense of a fundraiser of Ohio Second candidate Vic Wulsin. Matt also excoriates Sen. George Voinovich for voting with Democrats against an AMT fix. And he argues in favor of a proposal to force people to show proof of citizenship before buying license plates.

King, he of the Right Site, has two offerings regarding the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County. He rakes Chairman Rob Frost, this time because five elected officials have bolted the party. And he outs RPCC officers who are giving to Democrats. Finally, he gives a Golden RINO award to state legislators who co-sponsored a proposed law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (be warned, King won't be winning an award for respectful descriptions of LGBTs any time soon.)

Jill Miller Zimon reports on the semi-final Medical Mart deal. She also notes that the Ohio Crime Bureau seized voting machines in Franklin County and are investigating allegations of tampering. Finally, Jill finds Ken Blackwell's translation of Obama's "More Perfect Union" speech.

Boring Made Dull notes that the dead (referenda) walk -- i.e. another casino gambling initiative lurches toward us. Also, Boring is not pleased about Democrats picking which Republicans are appointed to the Board of Elections.

Blogging at The Point, Ben Keeler also notes that latest drama regarding the fight over the Summit County GOP -- the involvement by SoS Jennifer Brunner and local Dem chair Wayne Jones.

To round out that trio of Akronites, I offer selections from Jennifer Brunner's deposition and some predictions about the DC v. Heller case.

Nicely done, and excellent choice for the theme.

Ok - I did not recognize him as JFK - I was expecting it to be a movie star - even though I know I've seen the pic before. I hearby recuse myself from being a political blogger.
